6.2.2. Self-diagnostics system (OBD) and codes
THE GENERAL DATA

The digital voltmeter

The digital voltmeter is used for diagnostics of system of reduction of toxicity of exhaust gases and management of engine work.

The scanner

The scanner is used for definition of codes of malfunction and the analysis of control systems by the engine.

The prevention

On models with 1990 till 1994 the system of self-diagnostics OBD1, and since 1995 – system of self-diagnostics OBD2 is established.


For definition of codes of malfunction in system OBD1 it is necessary to disunite simply the verifying socket located under the panel of devices. But for definition of codes of malfunctions in system OBD2 use of the special device for viewing of codes of malfunctions is necessary. For carrying out of diagnostics of system of reduction of toxicity of exhaust gases and management of engine work it is desirable to use the digital voltmeter which has high entrance resistance and does not influence work of a checked chain (fig. the Digital voltmeter see).

For definition of codes of malfunctions and the analysis of control systems of the engine it is necessary to use special scanners (fig. the Scanner see).

Block ECM contains the built in system of self-diagnostics which finds out and classifies malfunctions in electric chains. When module ECM finds out malfunction, the control lamp "check engine" lights up, malfunction is identified, and the malfunction code registers in memory and remains in it.

There are four ways of self-diagnostics of malfunction of the engine. The control lamp "check engine" lights up, if there is a malfunction in U-way.

The U-way is user-friendliest.

Way of reading of memory. It is intended for department of maintenance service for check of the reserved codes of malfunctions.

D-way. It is used for check of faulty parts.

Way of clearing. It is intended for removal of the written down codes of malfunction.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Check up that the verifying socket of a way of malfunction is separated.
2. Include ignition, without starting the engine and check up that the lamp "check engine" on a combination of devices burns.
3. Observe of a bulb "check engine" which will highlight the codes of the malfunction which have been written down in memory of the computer. In the absence of codes of malfunction the lamp "check engine" will not burn. If the lamp "check engine" flickers, it means that the test socket of a way of malfunction is not separated.
4. Observing of a lamp "check engine", define malfunction codes. The first figure of a code of malfunction is highlighted by long flashes, and the second figure of a code of malfunction is highlighted by short flashes. For example, 4 long flashes represent figure 4, and two short flashes represents figure 2, that is a code of malfunction 42.
